Designer Labels: Do They Really Make You Look Better?

January 13, 2009 by Tera

Designer clothing has always been an attraction throughout the world. Commercials, movies, and television provide a visualization of the latest trends of designers. What’s hot one week may not be the next month. Commercialism helps designers promote their labels as much as possible by getting the hottest celebrities to wear them. They often promote the idea that you’ll look better, feel better, and are better if you wear their clothes.

Star Labels

In the late 1980’s designer logos became increasingly popular. They became synonymous with the person who wore the product, whether a movie star or a recording artist. Since it has gotten increasingly difficult to have any contact with a ’star’, people opt to purchase the clothes of the ’stars’ to make them feel as though they are close to them. Or children buy their clothing because they idolize celebrities, they want to look like them, be them.

Kimora Lee Simmons - is the President and Creative Director behind, KLS and Baby Phat fashions as well as Creative Director of Phat Fashions. She brings the glamour, elegance, street hip-hop flair to all of her designs, attracting all those who want to be fabulous in what they wear. Her designs are known the world over especially in the music and fashion industry.

Kimora’s influence in the fashion world has inspired younger generations of consumers with her glamorous, undeniable style. From runway model to fabulous fashionista, Kimora’s signature style has graced runways from New York To Paris. People love her larger than life persona and love wearing her clothes hoping they’ll make them feel as fabulous as she.

Sean ‘P-Diddy’ Combs - is a recording artist, record producer, actor, and clothing designer. His clothing label under his given first and middle name ‘Sean John’ is one of the top clothing and fragrance lines. Founded in 1998, it has rapidly grown from an urban label to an international brand. The collection is separated into categories including Sean John, Bad Boy Sportswear, Sean John Tailored, and Sean John accessories. Product categories include suits, bottoms, outerwear, leather accessories, shirts, ties, hats, and denim. These products are inspired by Mr. Combs’ image and reflect his personal style.

The clothing line is geared towards pre-teens and men up to 45 years of age. Sean John also launched a signature fragrance called Unforgivable that quickly became the best selling men’s fragrance in the country. His collection is distributed in department stores as well as in the ‘Sean John Boutique’ located on 41st street in New York.

Versace - Gianni Versace was founder of the Versace clothing line in 1978. After his death in 1997, his sister Donatella Versace became creative director of the design and his brother Santo Versace became CEO. The first Versace boutique was opened in Milan’s Via della Spiga in 1978. Today, Versace is one of the world’s leading international fashion labels. Versace’s style department employs a group of designers and stylists who work in teams under the supervision of creative director Donatella Versace.

There are several lines which make up Versace Group as a whole: Gianni Versace Couture, Bootylicious, Versace Home Collection, Versace Jeans Couture, and Versace Collection. Gianni Versace Couture, which contains high-end, often handmade apparel, jewelery, watches, fragrances, cosmetics, and home furnishings, is the House’s main line. This line is also presented on the runway at Milan’s fashion week. Versace also operates a hotel, the Palazzo Versace.

Donatella’s independent, strong woman inspired collection looks chic, sexy, and fierce. Versace has a very wide band of A list celebrities and models wearing their clothing. The list includes, Madonna, Beyonce, Halle Berry, Patrick Dempsey, Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore, Jennifer Lopez, Brittany Spears, and Elton John. Versace has eighty-one boutique locations around the world, in the U.S., and Canada. It also includes 123 retail areas in a variety of luxury multi-designer department stores such as Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Pick and Choose wisely

Everything looks better on television because TV takes the everyday and glamorizes it with beautiful dream homes, cars, and clothes and make people feel as though it is easy to get. For those who can afford expensive labels, buy to your heart’s content. But for those who cannot, it can be stressful trying to increase your income so that you can buy current designer trends.

Whatever size a person is on television, stylist and wardrobe experts choose clothing that fits the individual while in the process, making them look their best according to their body type. Every clothing item on television is hand picked by a stylist, so it is no accident that ‘this color is perfect for her skin’ or ‘that shirt fits him well’.

Wear What You Can Afford

So it really doesn’t matter what you wear as long as you feel good in it, it fits your body type, and is what you can afford. Some designers’ quality of fabric may look better, feel better, and last longer than other garments. Fortunately, because of the changes in the economy, fashion moguls are lowering their prices and coming up with ways to accommodate the less fortunate.

Sarah Jessica Parker is a prime example of someone who is thinking about the ‘average women’. Her line, Bittenis classy, girly, sophisticated, comfortable, and well planned. From Tee’s and cargos for comfort, to the classic black dress for evening wear.  There are also store Outlets that sell designer labels at discounted rates so that they can reach a broader audience by getting into the hands of the average consumer.

Hey T I agree with this sub-heading “Designer Labels:Do They Make You Look Better” they really don’t but I guess some people think they do. Like you said they should wear what they can afford and it might sometimes look better than the brand name product.

Thanks for checking it out. Although there are some cool designer labels, it’s best to buy what you can afford (especially nowadays). :-)
